Hatshepsut

As Hatshepsut looked out

Upon her kingdom, as

The sun set in the west,

She paused, and thought

Of those who long ago

Maligned her, for her

Power was so dangerous,

Her memory so tenuous,

And all her long accomplishments

Hung upon a thread of fate,

For eternity was so uncertain,

As they sought then to

Usurp her, as they plotted to

Erase her, as her life progressed

And youth then faded with the sunlight.

She coveted the sunrise

Over ancient Theban walls, and she

Longed for the security her predecessors

Posessed, as they passed

Into the afterlife, Osiris greeting

Then, and their journeys lay

Behind them, as Egypt praised

Their saving power.  And she wept

For the fate that lay before her,

As she passed from mortal sight,

And her memory then faded, as the night

Grew cold over the kingdom that forgot her.
